William L. “Bill” Jenks, 90, of Emporia, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018. He was born May 6, 1928 in Altavista, VA, the son of William and Helen (Brumfield) Jenks.

Bill graduated from Virginia Tech in 1953 after service in the U.S. Naval Air. He worked for British American Tobacco, Crawford Manufacturing, and Hetlinger Development Center and Sheltered Workshop. He served for two terms as Emporia Mayor and eight years on the City Commission.

Bill married Joanne R. Rodgers on March 1, 1952 in Roanoke, Virginia. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Col. William A. (Debbie) Jenks of Chesterfield, Virginia, Monica Lee Jenks (Kevin Doyle) of Arlington, Virginia, Susan (Randy) Carroll of Olathe, Kansas, Eugenia (Darin) Jenks-Whitsitt of Enid, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his sister, Carolyn (David) Shelton of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Eugene Jenks.

Cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at a later date. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

The family would like to thank Hand-in-Hand Hospice and Friendship Meals for their care.
