Shirley J. (Brown) Collins, 87, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

She was born the daughter of John Ramsey Brown and Lyllis Wilkinson Brown, oldest sister of Marshall R. Brown, Carol Thomas and Kirk R. Brown. She attended Kansas, Indiana schools. She was a 1949 graduate of Lecompton High School, Washburn University, BA, Mid-term and signed teacher’s contract Topeka High School in 1954. Maid of Honor christening LST 882, member of Delta Gamma, Washburn Players, Women’s Council, Phi Sigma Chi, AAUW, DAR, World Organization of China Painters, Listed in Who’s Who. She taught High School General Biology, Life, and Earth Sciences at Shawnee Mission North, West Hartford, Connecticut and Bethel, Vermont. She attended graduate studies at KU, majored in geology at Castleton, VT. “It was the most exciting technical, rock-talking, earth-shaking, science I ever experienced”. She enjoyed porcelain decorating and teaching, genealogy, reading, gardening, playing piano, miniature creating. She returned to Topeka in 1992. R. L. Collins predeceased.

Survivors include a sister, Carol Brown Thomas; her brother, Kirk Ramsey Brown

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Marshall R. Brown.

Honoring Shirley’s request, cremation is planned. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
