Gary W. Vines, Sr., 60, Topeka, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Midland Care Hospice House. He was born in Topeka on November 16, 1957 to Ray and Loretta Vines. Gary married Verla on April 18, 1997 in Topeka. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Ray Vines, and step-father, Bob Mulvihill.
He attended Topeka High School and joined the U.S. Marines in 1975. That year Gary was recognized as being the youngest Marine on active duty during the celebration of the Marine Corps anniversary.
He was a self-taught auto mechanic and worked at Crocker’s Auto Service, Adams Business Forms, and the State Printing Plant.
Gary had the unique ability of being able to diagnose almost any problem with an engine, as well as being able to fix and repair just about anything. He restored a 1972 Ford Maverick and 1974 Dodge Challenger. He and Verla enjoyed taking both cars to local cruises on Saturday nights. Gary loved a good story, and could spin a few tales of his own.
