He was born November 10, 1939, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Highland P. and Carmen J. (Long) Horton. He was a 1957 graduate of Topeka High School and attended Kansas State University. He served in the U.S. Army.
Don was employed by Thompson’s Dehydrating Company and later for the United States Postal Service in Topeka and retired as supervisor after 20 years of service. He owned and operated Horton’s Income Tax Service in Topeka.
He was an active member and served as treasurer for many years at Faith Family Life Centre in Topeka, Moose Lodge No. 555 and was a member and served as Past President of Civitan’s in Topeka.
Don married Virginia Ann Gabe on December 25, 1958 in Topeka, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three children, Michelle (John) Hickling, Topeka, Jeffrey Horton, Colorado Springs, CO and Michael (Christi) Horton, Topeka; 12 grandchildren, Stephanie, Charisse, Caleb, Gabriel, Alexander, Havilah, Faith, Emma, Nicholas, Joshua, William and Margaret; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Corienne Clearman.
Don loved his grandkids and was an avid Elvis fan. He was a brilliant, man who enjoyed traveling, bowling, umpiring softball, all sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and was a gifted statistician. We was also ornery and made people laugh.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2019 at the Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, KS 66610.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 21, 2019 at Faith Family Life Centre, 3710 NW Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS 66617.
