Joe was born June 3, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Joseph B. and Theressa (Jones) Newbery, Sr.
He graduated from Cleburne High School in Cleburne, TX and from Washburn University in 1971.
He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 4 years.
He worked for the A.T. & S.F. Railroad as an estimator for 23 years. He then worked for Topeka Bank & Trust as an Auditor and the First National Bank of Alma as a Vice President and Loan Officer, and finally for the Kansas State Department of Credit Unions retiring in 1997. After retirement, he worked as a tour guide at the State Capital and volunteered at the Great Overland Station.
He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, the Alma Rotary Club where he served as President, American Legion Post No. 1, and Topeka Downtown Kiwanis.
Joe married Marie L. Richter on June 25, 1950 in Alvin, TX. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Karen (Jim) Holt, Valley Center, Kathy (Lewis) Ogle, Osage City, Karla (Lyle) Williamson, Yates Center, Kristi, (Bob) Garcia, Manchester, MO; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Mount Hope Cemetery Funeral Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2019 at the Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka First Southern Baptist Church or the Topeka Rescue Mission.
