Cheryl Marie Dechand
1951 - 2019

Cheryl Marie Dechand, 67, of Topeka, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 after a very courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born on April 14th, 1951, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Clifford Delaware, Sr, and Betty Jane (Carlson) Swaim. She attended Silver Lake schools from third grade through eleventh grade when her family relocated to Kansas City, KS. She was a graduate of Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas.
Cheryl was employed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Topeka for 37 years, retiring in 2006. She was an active member of the Oakland Community.

Cheryl married Albert J. Dechand, Jr. on November 22, 2000 in Miami, Oklahoma. He survives. Other survivors include a son, John (Nellie) Dechand, Salt Lake City, UT; three siblings, Clifford (Terri) Swaim, Jr., Phoenix, AZ, Susie (Jerry) Martens, Topeka, and Robert (Susan) Swaim, Virginia Beach, VA; several beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Cheryl’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her devoted husband “Bert”, son, and all of her family and friends. She was a loving wife, sister, step-mother, aunt, and great-aunt to so many. Her smile, kind heart, and infectious laugh were just a few of her infinite beautiful attributes. She treasured the time she got to spend with her great-nephews, Raleigh and Lincoln Martens, and great-niece, Evie Martens, especially their fun sleepovers! Her motherly nature and huge heart lit up any room she entered. Whether it was having a glass of wine (or three) with Mary Jo, or margaritas in the Arizona heat, or walking along Virginia Beach with her toes in the sand, she cherished every moment she spent with her loved ones, near and far. She was an avid Kansas sports fan, not missing a game unless she dozed off in her recliner.

Despite her long, hard-fought battle, she continued to greet everyone with the biggest smile and the warmest hug. She kept her gentle, kind, loving demeanor and positive attitude until her final days. She will be missed dearly.

Honoring her request, cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Funeral Chapel & Reception Center, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, Kansas, on Saturday, March 23rd at 10 am. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Angel Fund through the Stormont Vail Foundation. Go to https://www.stormontvail.org/give/donate/ and select “Gift”, “Designation”, “Other”, “Angel Fund”.
