Loulu Maye Heironimus
1932 - 2019

Loulu Maye Heironimus, 87, of Topeka, passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, October 10, 2019.

She was born March 19, 1932, in Hutchinson, Kansas, and was raised in Haven, Kansas, by her parents, Frederick Franklin and Edna Maye (Dickerson) Hiett.

At an early age, she was responsible and actively involved in farm chores – and often reminisced of herding cattle and milking cows at only 8 years old. She raised her horse, Muffin, and took great pride in that accomplishment. She was a proficient horsewoman – and was hired by a horse owner, Jim Davis to show his horse Heavenly Gold in the American Royal in 1949.

Loulu Maye also loved season and weather changes. And she never shied away from a storm. She loved snow, the mountains, and skiing.

She was a talented musician – played piano, drum, timpani, guitar, and accordion. She played timpani in the Wichita Youth Symphony – and was selected specifically because she had perfect pitch and could tune the timpani quickly. She instilled a love of music in her children, each becoming instrumentalists or vocalists.

Loulu Maye was a Girl Scout leader while living in Augusta, Kansas. She was involved in the development of the Four Winds Girl Scout Camp. She was adamant that the girls have a place to camp, and an environment to develop leadership skills and lifelong friendships. She was a feminist, and believed that women and girls were strong and capable and modeled this. She also raised five self-confident boys, who learned to respect women. She referred to herself as a bleeding-heart progressive.

She was PTA president at Garfield Elementary in Augusta, Kansas during the ‘60’s, and was voted mother of the year, 1964.

She was warm, open, accepting and non-judgmental. She welcomed people of all ages, capabilities, ethnicities and cultures. She was a skilled nurse and a compassionate individual. She overcame many adversities, reinventing herself and after raising her 8 children returned to school and earned her RN. She was employed by Stormont Vail Hospital where she retired in 2009.

Loulu Maye was a graduate of Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson, KS, attended Hutchinson Community College, and graduated from the Stormont Vail School of Nursing.

She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka.

Lovingly referred to as “LaLa” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her seven children and their families:

Georgea de Medina, Asbury, NJ and her daughter, Alina de Medina.

Richard (Wei Shao) Heironimus, Plano, TX and his children, Naomi Heironimus and her children, Sydney Lewis and her daughter, Harley, Aiden and Marcus Morris, Phillip (JoAnna) Heironimus and Holly Heironimus.

Dorian Heironimus, Lawrence, KS and his daughter, Sarah Heironimus and her children, EV and Javier Heironimus-Bishop.

Children of Julian Heironimus who passed in 2007, Erik (Savannah) Heironimus and his daughter, Emory; and Julie Heironimus.

Athena (Susan Moehl) Heironimus, Prairie Village, KS.

Brent (Gohnprapa Litipan) Heironimus, Bangkok, Thailand, and his son, Boonyagon Ehden Heironimus.

She is also survived by her sister, Loretta (Ray) Stutzman, Potomac Falls, VA; and her brother, Jerry (Virginia) Hiett, Rogers, AR and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Loulu Maye was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackie and Jimmie Hiett; her son, Julian Nathan Heironimus; her son-in-law, Richard de Medina; and her parents, Frederick F. and Edna (Maye) Hiett.

Honoring her request, cremation is planned. A memorial and celebration of life ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka.
