Rodney Allen Montney, 58, of Topeka, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020.

He was born May 22, 1961, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Vern Irving and Marie Maxine (Gatlin) Montney. He was a graduate of Garden City High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Science in Mining and Material Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO.

Rodney was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation with Materials and Research in Topeka for 35years and was an instructor for Certified Inspector Training for Kansas State University in Salina for 10 years. He also owned and operated Vernie’s Vending and donated a portion of the proceeds to the Topeka Rescue Mission.

He was a member of the Christ The King Catholic Church, of Topeka.

Rodney married Devern Pasley on May 5, 1990 in Topeka. She survives in Topeka. Other survivors include his daughter, Natalie Montney and her fiancé, Trevor Frye, Carbondale, KS; his son, Justin Montney and his fiancé, Alexis-Athena Wyatt, Topeka; his granddaughter, Caroline Frye; and six siblings, Edith Oxford, Ulysses, KS, Wayne Montney and his wife, Marilyn, Springfield, IL, Susan Purcell and her husband, George, Satanta, KS, Gary Montney, Colorado Springs, CO, Gordon Montney, and his wife, Carolyn, Lawrence, KS and Virginia Hammersmith and her husband, Bob, Lawrence, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Tim Montney.

Rodney enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, playing softball, K-State Football, exercising, weightlifting, wrestling in college and collecting music.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 24, 2020 at Christ The King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th Street, Topeka. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m., Thursday at Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka.
