Janet B. McNeil, 89, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2020. She was born November 30, 1930 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the daughter of Milton Frederic and Freida L. (Finkle) Brickner.

Janet graduated from Bolton Central School in Bolton Landing, New York in 1948, where she was Class President, Cheerleader, and President of the Band and Chorus. Janet earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Secretarial Sciences from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont in 1952, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After graduating from college, Janet attended Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and earned her commission in the US Navy in 1953 and was assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Seattle, Washington. Janet was a homemaker and did a variety of volunteer work. She was an avid bridge player, a fabulous cook / baker, and loved to knit.

Janet married Darrell O. McNeil on September 18, 1953 at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Washington. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2019. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frederic and Roger Brickner.

Survivors include: children; Michael (Loretta) McNeil of Endicott, New York, Richard McNeil of Topeka, Laura (Brian Sudis) McNeil of Overland Park, Kansas, and William (Katrina) McNeil of Los Angeles, California; four grandchildren; Stephanie (Tim) Ayers, Samantha (Ryder) Florin, Andrea McNeil, and Andrew McNeil; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Abigail.

A Celebration of Janet’s Life will be held at a later date. Private inurnment will take place at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the family will hold a memorial at Lake George, New York at a later date.
