James Eugene Stanton

January 25, 1921 — February 15, 2021

There is a saying for old pilots who pass away: "flown west" (into the sunset).

On February 15, 2021 my dad, Captain James Stanton passed away at the age of 100. He was the last of the "flying Stantons" who were the first father-sons to fly for Trans World Airlines at the same time. James, his father Stan and his brother Bud were all captains.

Dad started flying for TWA as a co-pilot out of Kansas City in 1942 on the DC-3s and retired as a captain on the L-1011s out of San Francisco in 1981. His love of flying influenced his sons, Steve (commercial pilot), and Bob (retired Northwest captain); his grandsons, Jason (captain for Wheels Up Aviation), Robert (captain for Spirit Airlines) and Rick (flies for National Beef).

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley T. and Wilhelmina Stanton. Jim's wife, Virginia Lois Stanton preceded him in death in 1991.

Survivors include his sister, Suzanne Seamon (Matt), sister, Patricia Kawalic (Mark); brother, Charles Stanton (Marilee); his sons, Robert Stanton and Steve Stanton (Catherine); 4 grandsons, 3 granddaughters and 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment of James' cremated remains will be at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6450 West Northern, Glendale, AZ, 85302 on March 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.

Dad loved dogs and had a canine companion with him since he was a boy. In lieu of flowers, Dad would have wanted contributions made to S.C.A.R.S., a rescue home for abused and abandoned dogs; PO Box 22, Auburn, KS 66402.
