Steven Blane “Steve” Beck, 61, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

He was born November 25, 1959 in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Jerome Charles and Barbara Gale (Krehbiel) Beck. He was a 1977 graduate of Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita and attended Friends University, Wichita State University and Butler County Community College.

Steve was employed by Truck Parts and Equipment in Wichita and Topeka, KS, later for Drive Train Inc. and LKQ in Topeka. He also owned and operated the Grattidge and Watkins Liquor Stores in Topeka.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church where he served as Athletic Director for four years in Topeka and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Garden Plain, KS. He was a member of DU, QU, Pheasants Forever, NWTF and Rocky Mountain Elk club.

Steve married Annette Marie Elpers on February 12, 1983 in Wichita, KS. She survives in Topeka. Other survivors include two children, Lisa Beck of Topeka and Brian Beck, and his wife, Jenna of Topeka; a granddaughter, Layla and another grandchild expected; Kristen Mengelkoch of Astoria, NY and Kelly Mengelkoch and her husband, Jeremy Dubin of Cincinnati, OH; his sister, Debbie Winkler and her husband, Greg of Topeka; his mother-in-law, Donna Harris of Wichita; siblings-in-law, Gregg Elpers and his wife, Lorri of Tulsa, OK, Suzie Blasi and her husband, Pat of Wichita and Mike Elpers and his wife, Theresa of Wichita; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Laurie Beck and his canine companion, Tessie.

Steve loved his family, his friends, and his faith. Steve coached Lisa and Brian along with many others in Topeka. From football and baseball to track, Steve enjoyed helping and teaching kids. He also served as athletic director at Christ the King Catholic School, putting in countless hours with humor, love and great care. He was very confident and comfortable in his faith.

Steve was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish and watch animals of any kind which are traits he inherited from his father. A good evening consisted of sitting by the lake with Annette, watching his ducks. He also was quite the golfer and thoroughly enjoyed his time on the course with friends and family, despite the broken clubs in his bag. Sunday afternoons were reserved for Nascar races and football games. He also loved to collect things. If Steve bought it or won it, it never left the house.

To the untrained eye, Steve could appear a bit grizzly. However, he was the kindest, warmest, most gentle person you would ever hope to know. Storytelling was one of Steve’s gifts. He could hold the attention of any table while sharing a story with laughter and always a good ending. Steve showed his onery side by playing practical jokes on those around him. Still, all who were fortunate enough to know Steve knew he would be there for them – whenever and wherever.

Steve was just lucky while supporting any of his favorite causes. Nine times out of ten, Steve would go home with the big prize. He could fix anything. He was smart, especially during trivia night. One of his most endearing gifts was his ability to become the ultimate “escape artist” and skip big family events. Steve was the master. He was a devoted friend who loved a “buddy and a beer.” He was funny and the “king” of one-liners.

Most important to Steve was his family - all of his family from his sisters, the Elpers and most importantly his wife, daughter, son and daughter-in-law. One of his best roles was being “Papo” to his granddaughter and his soon-to-be grandson. Steve is cherished for a million little things that made up one incredible lifetime.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th Street, Topeka.
