Nancy was born July 5, 1949, in Alton, IL, to Joseph and Judith (Dean) Burns, the oldest of three siblings.

She graduated from Marquette High School in 1967.

Nancy married the love of her life, the Reverend William E. Smart on May 11, 1973. She met William at a prayer meeting and knew from that moment that she was in love for the rest of her life. She became a mother of two stepsons with her marriage to William. William and Nancy had three children of their own.

Nancy was a Homemaker and a Bank Teller. She managed her Family as William spread the word of the Holy Spirit through his many United Church of Christ Congregations in Missouri, Indiana, Alabama, North Dakota, Kansas, and Iowa.

She made lifelong friends during these journeys touching everyone she met with her gentle, sweet, loving, and caring spirit.
