Nancy L. (Burns) Smart, 72, of Topeka KS, passed away Thursday, May 5th, 2022.

Nancy was born July 5, 1949, in Alton, IL, to Joseph and Judith (Dean) Burns, the oldest of three siblings.

She graduated from Marquette High School in 1967.

Nancy married the love of her life, the Reverend William E. Smart on May 11, 1973. She met William at a prayer meeting and knew from that moment that she was in love for the rest of her life. She became a mother of two stepsons with her marriage to William. William and Nancy had three children of their own.

Nancy was a Homemaker and a Bank Teller. She managed her Family as William spread the word of the Holy Spirit through his many United Church of Christ Congregations in Missouri, Indiana, Alabama, North Dakota, Kansas, and Iowa.

She made lifelong friends during these journeys touching everyone she met with her gentle, sweet, loving, and caring spirit.

She retired from work and cared for William when he became ill with Alzheimer’s. She was married to William until his death in 2007.

Nancy moved to Topeka in 2009. She became a member of Covenant Baptist Church, serving on the Leadership Team as well as performing bookkeeping duties.

Nancy decorated for every holiday and change of the season. She was an avid reader of all books, especially the Bible. She loved and enjoyed baking, making personalized greeting cards, game nights and sleep overs with her grandchildren. Nancy loved to laugh and spend time with her family and friends.

She touched and changed the lives’ of everyone that she met. We can only imagine what the world would be like if it was full of Nancy Smarts.

Survivors include her son, Joshua (Tiffany) Smart of Topeka; her daughter, Joshanna (Chet) Stone of Topeka; her daughter, Eowyn (Jacob) Montgomery of Springfield IL; her step-son Kerry (Jane) Smart of Fleetwood PA; step-son, Jim Braniff of St. Louis, MO; brother, Patrick (Pam) Burns; brother, Timothy (Lynne) Burns; and her 11 grandchildren: Devin Kropa-Smart, Eve Kropa-Smart, Adele (Jarrid) Papay, Alexandria (Arrington) Mills; Josephine Smart; Samantha Smart; Danielle Smart, Charleston Smart, Christian Smart, Francheska Smart, and Lincoln Montgomery with another granddaughter on the way August 5th.
