Jeffrey L. Ungerer
1954 - 2022

Jeffrey L. Ungerer, 68, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on November 15, 2022, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 18, 1954, in Marysville, Kansas, to James L. and Nelda J. (Bargmann) Ungerer.

Jeff graduated from Marysville High School in 1972. He attended Washburn University, where he received a B.B.A in Accounting in 1976 (Summa Cum Laude), a Masters in Accounting from Oklahoma State University in 1977, and a J.D. from Washburn University in 1982 (Magna Cum Laude).

Jeff truly enjoyed working and devoted an immense amount of time and energy to helping those around him. From 1978-1987, he worked as an Assistant Professor of Taxation at Washburn University and then Adjunct Professor of Taxation from 1982-1990. Concurrent with teaching, he worked as a Partner at Davis, Wright, Unrein, Hummer & McAlister LLP from 1982-1990. In 1991, he ventured out to start his firm, specializing in Tax and Estate planning, and was later joined by trusted partners Dave Newbery and B.J. Hickert. Jeff left Newbery, Ungerer, and Hickert LLP in 2002 to serve as a General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer at MRV, Inc., where he worked until 2014. He always hoped to return to teaching.

Jeff was a member of the Kansas Bar Association, Texas Bar Association, Topeka Bar Association, Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants, and Northeast Chapter of Certified Public Accountants. He valued giving back to his community, holding positions as a Board Member for Washburn University Foundation and Midland Care. He also served as Chairperson and Director for the Topeka Community Foundation, Director of Stormont Vail Foundation, Director of Alliance Bank, Chairperson and Treasurer of the Board of Directors for the Family Service and Guidance Center of Topeka, Chairperson and Treasurer of the Board of Directors for ArtsConnect, Chairperson and Director of Hayden Foundation, and Chairperson for Christ the King Church Council.

In 1975, Jeff met Mary J. Langr while working together at Wilson’s Florist in Topeka. The two were married on January 6, 1979. For 43 years, they enjoyed traveling, hiking in the mountains, raising their children, and sharing in each other’s loving company as they navigated life.

Mary Ungerer of Topeka survives Jeff; his children, Jordan (Michael Bojtos) Ungerer of Astoria, NY, Mark (Cora) Ungerer of Topeka and Caitlin (John) Bricker of Chicago, IL; his grandchildren, Jasper Ungerer, Faye Ungerer, and Edith Ungerer; his siblings, Jim Ungerer, Marna (Bill) Raymond and Jon (Kathy) Ungerer, along with a host of other family and friends.

Jeff enjoyed mystery novels and shows, biking, walking the Shunga Trail, playing cards, and hunting with his siblings. Most of all, he relished time spent with his loving family.

Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, November 18, 2022, at Dove Cremations and Funerals Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka, KS 66610.
