Shirley Jean Modlin, 89, of Manhattan Beach, California passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023, in Topeka, Kansas with her family by her side.

She was born April 30, 1934, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Hand) Nelson. She received an Associate’s Degree in Communications from Kansas State College of Pittsburg.

Shirley was employed by the United States Air Force, until retiring in 1985.

Mrs. Modlin was a member of the Quilting Club of Manhattan Beach, and had many neighborhood friends.
Shirley married Ernest Modlin on May 24, 1973 in Pittsburg, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 6, 2010.

Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly (John) Whithorn, granddaughters, Angela (Rich) Smith, and Kristin (Gray) Bothwell, great grandchildren, Kinsley and Lillian Smith, and Liam Bothwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Judith Leftwich, and great granddaughter, Ciara Whithorn.

Shirley loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed quilting, reading, cooking, and traveling everywhere with her husband. She was an avid Los Angeles Lakers fan.

A wake will be held from 1:00pm – 3:00pm., Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, Kansas.

Interment will be at a later date in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
