Billie Dolores “Dee” Campbell, 88, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024 at her home in Topeka, Kansas in the care of McCrite Plaza Health Center and Prairie Wind Hospice.

Dee was born March 22, 1936 in Eureka, Kansas to Billie D. Holderman and Frances L. (Outon) Holderman Thompson.

Dee began her education in a one-room school house in the unincorporated community of Hiattville, Kansas where the family farmed and Dee was a member of the Bourbon County 4-H and raised her own calves as a 4-H project.

Dee was married to Irvin L. Henman of Augusta, Kansas and they had two daughters, Brenda D. Henman and Shelley L. Henman. Dee and her family lived and worked in the Kansas communities of Augusta, El Dorado, Cunningham, and then she moved to Wichita.

Dee later married Donald James Campbell in Wichita on December 23, 1968 and they spent 30 years with the United States Army in Fayetteville, North Carolina and Germany, later returning to North Carolina. They moved back to Junction City, Kansas in 1987 where Donald took a civilian position at Ft. Riley. Upon retirement from the military, the Campbells purchased a home in rural Chapman, Kansas and lived there until moving for the final time to Topeka, KS in 2014.

Dee cherished growing up on a farm in Kansas and then returning to her family and rural Kansas roots. She loved to travel and enjoyed the experience of living and traveling in Germany while overseas with the military.

Dee had many interests which she shared with family and numerous friends around the country. She loved to square dance from a young age and was an avid reader. She was a frequent visitor to the public library in every community where she lived. She was a member of the Red Hats organization in several communities. Dee especially enjoyed family holidays and playing cards and other games with extended family. She was an excellent cook. Dee had a special love for the cats who shared her life and were her pets and companions for many years.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents; brother James F. Holderman, and her husband Donald J. Campbell. She is survived by her daughters Brenda D. Henman and Shelley L. Henman of Topeka, KS. She is also survived by her granddaughter Laura D. (Gay) Allen (Jason) of Rogersville, MO and her great-grandchildren Amber L. Allen of Springfield, MO and Brandon K. Allen (Sophia) of Yukon, OK and her great-great grandsons Bradley and Arthur Allen of Yukon, OK; sister Joyce (Thompson) Allegrucci of Lawrence, KS, brother R. Duane Thompson (Candy) of Fairplay, CO; brother Jerry D. Thompson (Nancy) of The Woodlands, TX, sister Judith M. (Thompson) Deyo (David) of Greensboro, NC, brother Eugene Holderman (Kay) of Scottsdale, AZ, and sister Bette A. (Holderman) Scott (Bill) of Escondido, CA; many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Dee chose to be cremated and will be inurned at the columbarium at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan, KS with her husband Donald J. Campbell. A private family memorial ceremony will be held at a later date.
