Listen to Obituary

Brett Michael Maxwell, beloved father, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home in Topeka, KS, on July 2, 2026. Born on February 11, 1977, in Paola, KS, Brett’s vibrant spirit and compassionate heart enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Throughout his 49 years, Brett embodied warmth, humor, and unwavering generosity. After graduating from Winfield High School in 1995, Brett continued to pursue personal and professional growth, earning his CDL license and dedicating himself to hard work in every endeavor he undertook. Yet, beyond any title or certification, it was Brett’s proud dedication to his family and his community that truly set him apart.

Brett’s greatest joys resided in his children—Braden, McKayla, and Kolby—who were, in his own words, his proudest accomplishments. He raised them with gentle wisdom, infectious laughter, and boundless love, leaving indelible marks on their hearts and the foundation for them to flourish. Brett also cherished his mother, Millie Maxwell, and shared a close bond with his sister, Nikki Horne. His playful sense of humor and steadfast devotion spilled over into his relationships with his beloved nieces and nephews—Roger Stander, Gabe Horne, Tori Leffew, Sidney Koehler, and Wyatt Leffew—as well as his cousins and many treasured friends.

Family relationships extended back through generations of support and guidance. Brett was preceded in death by Grandma and Grandpa Barnett, Grandma and Grandpa Maxwell, and many beloved aunts and uncles, whose memories and teachings guided him throughout his journey.

Brett’s life was a celebration of curiosity and kindness. He was an avid reader and writer, lover of dad jokes and bright conversations. His creative soul found expression through drawing, jigsaw puzzles, crafting, and collecting coins. Brett found happiness in the simple pleasures of cooking, building intricate Lego creations, watching NASCAR, and rooting for his favorite football team, Detroit Lions. He relished the quiet challenge and delight of cognitive function games and was ever the champion of care packages for children, believing even the smallest gesture could brighten someone’s day.

Service was an intrinsic part of Brett’s character. He gave both time and resources to others, volunteering at food banks, donating plasma and blood, and lending a helping hand with Habitat for Humanity and the Helping Hands Humane Society. Through selfless action and quiet humility, Brett’s legacy of community care will echo well beyond his years.

The loss of Brett Michael Maxwell leaves a void impossible to fill, but his life’s journey remains a treasure—an enduring reminder to love generously, laugh often, and always look for ways to lift others up.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Brett’s honor at Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, KS 66610, on August 1, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. All who knew Brett are welcome to join in remembrance and gratitude for the profound impact he made on this world.
