Charles F. “Chuck” Schecher, 87, of Horton, Kansas passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2026. He was born June 13, 1938, the son of Anton “Tony” and Ernestine (Peden) Schecher.
Chuck attended St. Leo’s School through the 8th grade, and graduated from Horton High School in 1956. He attended Barber College in Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in June of 1955 to 1964, serving with Battery C 1154th Field Artillery and Battery B Second Howitzer Battalion. After completing Barber College, he joined Winchell’s Barber Shop before opening Chuck’s Barber Shop and Gun Repair, serving the community for 21 years. As Horton’s only sporting goods store, many in the community purchased their first firearm and their first haircut there.
Chuck worked at Meyer Lumber as a yard foreman and contract carpenter, served as the Brown County Noxious Weed Director, and Quality Control Manager, overseeing quality control in production plants in Hiawatha, Kansas; Lumberton, North Carolina and upstate New York, and the State of Kansas, as an Antenna/Tower Specialist. He retired from the State of Kansas Department of Planning as an Engineering Technician, continuing to work driving a school bus for USD 430 in addition to working for Phoenix Tower Service.
A true outdoorsman, Chuck met each day with enthusiasm, eager to lend an experienced hand. Golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening or wood cutting kept him active. An avid hunter, as past President of the Coyote Hunting Association, he advocated before the Kansas Legislature to protect hunter’s rights. A Master Gardener, he was always generous with his produce.
Chuck married his high school sweet heart, Bernetta F. Clarke on September 30, 1957. She preceded him in death as did his son, Michael; grandson, Keaton; great-grandson, Jeffrey Hedrick, two brothers, Robert and Jim Schecher; and three sisters, Barbara McClaskey; Mary Ann Bontrager, and Toni Andrews.
Survivors include one son, Jerry of Tecumseh, Kansas, one daughter, Laura (Clay) Cowart of Horton; granddaughter, Nicole (Keith) Henry of Topeka; grandsons, Jacob Cowart (Jessica Murray) of North Carolina; Naaman Schecher of Tecumseh, and great-grandsons, Kaden and Jaxon Henry of Topeka.
Chuck requested a private family graveside inurnment service.
Chuck was an avid reader, and was a supporter of the Horton Public Library, where you could find him often browsing the bookshelves for his next read. He suggested memorial contributions may be given in his name to the Horton Public Library, 809 1st Ave. E, Horton, Kansas 66439.
