Connie L Mills

May 30, 1946 — May 16, 2024

Connie, 77, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024.

She was born May 30, 1946, in Topeka, to parents Robert Anderson Cooper and Margaret (Keller) Cooper. She graduated from Topeka West High School in 1964 and the first Certified Medical Assistant class in 1977.

Connie married Roger Wayne Mills on December 18, 1964.

Connie was employed by the Orthopedic Clinic of Topeka part time while in high school and full time from 1964 until 1977.

They became parents of son Jason Bartlett Mills in 1976. Connie predominantly was a stay at home mother, however, she and Wayne delivered the Topeka Daily Capital, co-managed JCW Printing and took on other endeavors.

When Jason left for the University of Tulsa in 1994 on a football scholarship, Connie decided to re-enter the workplace. Her only request was that she be off work every Friday during football season to attend all games. So in 1995, Topeka Family Practice Clinic and then office manager Sue Miskell hired Connie and indeed allowed her to be absent on Fridays to fly with the team to away games as well as attend all home games. After college football ended, Jason was drafted as a free agent to the New York Jets. What a thrill it was for his parents to see him suit up for the New York Jets vs Green Bay Packers game at Lombardi field in 1999.

Connie continued working for the Topeka Family Practice and in 1996 helped open the Mission Woods office which later became St. Francis Family Medicine. She retired in 2011.

For 12 years, she was the caregiver for Wayne who suffered from many medical problems. He passed away on October 13, 2005.

Having known each other as members of First Congregational Church, Connie and Jim Bass became partners in 2012. They enjoyed traveling to England, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy and Mexico for the next 8 years. Jim passed away in 2020.

Connie hopefully leaves a legacy of being one of the best sports enthusiasts ever. Softball, football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, wrestling, golf, power lifting: she could be found cheering on Tulsa, Wichita State, Northwest Missouri State, Seaman, KU, K State and any other sport that may unexpectedly be playing at any given moment. As a result, she could talk sports with the best of them. She will always be so overwhelmingly proud of the athletic accomplishments of her son and grandchildren.

Survivors include son, Jason Mills and wife April, grandchildren, Lauren, Ewan and Maegan; sister and husband Steve and DeeDee Clifton, their daughter Dr. Courtney Clifton, their son Brett Clifton and wife Jill and their children Connor, Parker, Ella and Ryan; brother and wife Dr. Mitch and Mary Cooper and their son and wife Dr. Max and Kelli Cooper and son Noah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her sister Barbara Cooper Cook.

Connie is very grateful to have had Jim's family welcome her into their family; Jaminda Bass, her husband Jimmy Holmes and their children Micah and Isaac; Joren Bass, his wife Beth and daughter Aero; Bruce and Glenda Bower.

Services will begin with Visitation from 1:00pm – 2:00pm, Tuesday May 28, 2024 at the First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave, Topeka with the Funeral immediately after. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka.

Memorials may be given to First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave, Topeka, KS 66604.

Always in my heart: KINDLINESS TO EVERYONE
