A pilot, an astronomer, a craftsman, and a faithful servant—Danny Dee "Dan" Nelson, 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 4, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas.

Dan’s story began on November 25, 1935, in Clarinda, Iowa, born to Charles and Ruth (Murdock) Nelson. It was behind the counter of the family business, Nelson’s Market, where Dan learned his most valuable lessons. The grocery store shaped his famously humble, gentle character and taught him how to connect with people—wisdom that served him just as well as the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering he later earned from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He went on to enjoy a fulfilling, successful 35-year career as an engineer and manager.

The greatest chapter of his life began on September 26, 1959, when he married Connie Kay Hughes. For 67 years, Dan and Connie defined what it meant to love unconditionally, bringing grace to every community they called home. They spent three decades in Fort Wayne, Indiana, before chasing the clear skies of Tucson, Arizona, in 1995. In 2005, they made their final move to Topeka, desiring nothing more than to be a central part of their granddaughters' daily lives.

Dan was a man of quiet, deep conviction. Dedicated to the Lord early on, his personal relationship with Christ grew into the bedrock of his life. Together with Connie, he raised his two boys in the Christian faith with intentionality and love.

Dan looked at the world with boundless curiosity. He found freedom in the skies as an instrument-rated private pilot, wonder in the dark desert nights of Tucson as an amateur astronomer, and peace in his Topeka workshop, where he spent hours meticulously finishing wood projects.

Dan’s family was his pride and joy. The mutual devotion between Dan, Connie, and their sons was a beautiful testament to their family bond.

His legacy is carried on by his wife, Connie; his sons, Greg Nelson and David (Beth) Nelson; his granddaughters, Sydney (Anthony) Howcroft and Shannon (Matthew) Gramling; two precious great-granddaughters; and his brother, Richard (Alice Ann) Nelson.

Though he is missed, his family takes comfort in knowing he has arrived home to the words of Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
