Derek W. Dillard

Derek Wayne Dillard, 64, of Topeka, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. He was born March 11, 1962, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of William Oliver and Nancy Jo (Gatewood) Dillard, Sr.

Derek Wayne Dillard began his educational journey at Parkdale Elementary School and Highland Park North before graduating from Highland Park High School in 1980. He later attended Butler Community College, where he earned his associate degree. His journey eventually took him to Seattle, Washington, where he continued his education and proudly earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington.

Derek began his professional career in the insurance industry, working as a claims adjuster. However, he later discovered a calling that would allow him to make a lasting difference in the lives of others - education. Derek began teaching Science and Math in the Houston public school system, where he dedicated more than 30 years to educating, encouraging, and inspiring generations of students.

Derek was highly regarded by his coworkers, peers, staff, and students. He was rarely without a smile and had a natural way of lighting up a room with his warm personality and winning grin. He genuinely cared about the people around him and had a gift for making others feel welcomed, valued, and appreciated. Throughout his many years in education, Derek left an impression that extended far beyond the classroom.

Family held a special place in Derek's heart. He shared a particularly unique bond with his cousins, Rebecca Murphy and Evonne Akins, and his nephew, Brandon Williams - the four of them connected by the special distinction of sharing the same birthday, March 11.

Derek also loved welcoming family and friends to visit him in Houston. He was a wonderful host who took great pride in showing off his city, making sure his guests had a good time, and creating memories along the way. Seeing the people he loved happy brought him great joy.

Derek was preceded in death by his father, William Oliver "Stunt" Dillard Sr., and his younger brother, William Oliver "June" Dillard Jr.

Derek leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Nancy J. Dillard; sister, LaNae Dawn Williams; sister-in-law, Tamika Shawnte Dillard; nephews, Brandon Coe Williams and Tariq Korleon Dillard; nieces, Brittney Johnae Williams-Nwabueze and Tamyra Shabrae Norwood; great-niece, Amaya Marie Williams; and great-nephew, Tru William Nwabueze.

Derek also leaves behind countless family members, friends, coworkers, former students, and loved ones whose lives were made brighter simply because they knew him.

After a life filled with learning, teaching, laughter, family, friendship, and more than three decades devoted to helping young minds grow, Derek's earthly journey has come to an end. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the smiles he shared, the memories he created, and the love he gave will continue to live on in all who knew him.

A funeral ceremony will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Cremation will follow the ceremony and private inurnment will take place at a later date.

As Derek makes his journey home, we celebrate a life well lived, a teacher who made a difference, a family member who brought joy, and a man whose winning smile will never be forgotten.
