Dorothy Dean Miller, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 86. Born on April 19, 1939, in Lawrence, Kansas, Dorothy led a life characterized by kindness, love for her family, and unwavering spirit.
Dorothy’s career began as a secretary at the Kansas Neurological Institute (KNI), from which she transitioned to work with Kansas Vital Statistics. Her professional journey was marked by dedication and genuine desire to help others. Education played a vital role in her life, having attended Lawrence High School, where she fostered friendships that lasted throughout her life.
Those who knew Dorothy will remember her vivacious personality. She was known for being very outgoing and always striving to look her best. Dorothy had a rare gift of kindness; she treated everyone she met with warmth and respect. This kindness extended to her family, of whom she was immensely proud. Dorothy cherished her summers and took great joy in watching her son, Shannon Miller, play baseball. Her laughter and enthusiasm were infectious, and those moments created lasting memories full of happiness.
An avid reader, Dorothy found solace in Scripture, often sharing her insights throughout her day. She also loved writing and telling jokes, and her creativity blossomed in her poems, which often reflected her deep love for life and family.
Dorothy is survived by her son Shannon Miller; daughter Becky Turner; grandson Wilson miller; brother Gary (Linda) Wheeler; sister Dixie Learned; and niece Kelly Learned. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Riley Miller, with whom she shared nearly 40 years of marriage, and by her sister Jennie Chambers.
Dorothy will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
