Duane David Steinle

Duane David Steinle, 89, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022.

He was born August 4, 1932, on a farm north of Lucas, Kansas, the son of David Carl and Esther (Schneider) Steinle. He graduated from Lucas High School in 1950 attended Kansas State University and Washburn University. He served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955, spending all four years overseas – mostly among Japan, the Philippines and Korea. He spent part of his time in the 103rd Detachment, building housing for Navy personnel in Guam and the Mariana Islands. He spent the last part of his service on an aircraft carrier.

He received the Medal for National Defense, the Korean Service Medal, Navy Expert Rifle, and United Nations and Navy Good Conduct medals.

Duane was employed as a bookkeeper by the Kansas Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning and then by the Washburn University Bookstore, retiring in 1992.

Mr. Steinle was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 1, of Topeka. He was also a member of the Washburn University Alumni Association. He was a member of the Topeka First United Methodist Church for 57 years and attended the Lucas United Methodist Church.

Duane married Mary Lou Durnil on September 1, 1957 in Almena, Kansas. She survives, along with two nephews, one niece and several cousins.

Duane enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and sports. He was a fan of Washburn University athletics and K-State sports. After retirement he spent a lot of time at their second home in Lucas.

Private interment will be at the Lucas Cemetery at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lucas United Methodist Church, 322 N. Main Street, Lucas, KS 67648, the Topeka First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Boulevard, Topeka, KS 66603 or to the family.
