Edward C. Scarlett

Edward C. Scarlett, known to many as “Coach”, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

Ed was the son of the late Edward and Mabel Margaret Scarlett, born and raised in Atchison, Kansas. From an early age Ed enjoyed athletics…football, baseball, track. Ed was quarterback for the Atchison Redmen during his high school tenure.

Ed taught at Topeka West and for many years was the wrestling coach, football coach and tennis coach. In 1973, he became assistant principal at Jardine Junior High School and then at Boswell Junior High School. When Boswell closed, Ed went back to teaching at Topeka High School and became assistant football coach. He retired in 2000, but was continuously recognized by former players and students wherever he went.

Ed will be remembered as a loving husband, a good father, and an exceptional grandfather. He was blessed to have a blended family. He is survived by his loving wife, Katie; his children, Bryan (Maria), Elizabeth Scarlett, Margaret Fox (Lew), Laurie Rueschhoff (Brad), Megan Fisher (Stephen) and Sara Ochs (Jason). He was blessed with many grandchildren whom he loved deeply.

His passing leaves an enduring legacy of honesty, integrity and compassion. He was a man of honor and a man of quiet faith.

He was preceded in passing by his first wife, Marcia and his son, Eric.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kansas Police Dog Association, KPDA, PO Box 48, Andover, KS 67002 or online at kpda.org. They are a training and discipline program which includes PATROL canines, SEARCH and RESCUE canine teams and TRACKING/TRAILING canines.

Per Mr. Scarlett’s request, cremation has already taken place. Graveside service is planned for Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 1:30 p.m., at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka, KS 66604. Please join the family in saying goodbye to a gentle man.
