Elaine Smith Chescheir, 85, died peacefully April 10 in her apartment in Pearland, TX. She was born March 23, 1923 in Lewisburg, WV, the only child of the late Mabel Bower Smith and Edwin Harold Smith. She was raised in Manhattan, KS.
Elaine was a member of the National Honor Society at Manhattan High School. She was a 1951 graduate of Kansas State College, and a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She graduated in 1951, with a B.S. in Business Administration. She married Lt. Col. (ret.) Thomas Russell Chescheir in 1944. Tom and Elaine moved to Topeka in 1955 and settled into a close-knit neighborhood, where they established life-long friendships. Both were active members of Grace Episcopal Cathedral, and Elaine was a member of the Nautilus Club. Elaine worked for American General Publishing and for 18 years she worked for Jim McHenry at Union Central Life Insurance Co. Tom died October 18, 1991, and in 1994 Elaine moved to Aldersgate Village in Topeka. At Aldersgate, Elaine was known for being active and involved. She participated in fund-raisers, worked on many committees, and became adept at welcoming new neighbors. She walked, line-danced and did Yoga. She enjoyed games and puzzles of all kinds. Her favorite TV shows were Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Elaine also was known for her personal sense of style, so another favorite activity was shopping for distinctive clothes and colorful jewelry.
In June of 2007, Elaine moved to Houston to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Russell Edwin Chescheir and his wife, Janis Parks Chescheir, of Sugar Land; her daughter, Sharon Lee Chescheir Zimmerman, and her husband, Blair Edwin Zimmerman, of Houston. Elaine's grandchildren are Jacob Edwin Chescheir and Lucas Harold Chescheir, of Stafford, TX; and Bryce Elaine Zimmerman and Reid Thomas Zimmerman, of Houston. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel in Topeka. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are invited to join the family at 2:30 at Aldersgate Village. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Good Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 SW Asbury Dr, Topeka, KS, 66614.
