Harold Dale Sandberg

March 11, 1927 — March 15, 2022

Harold "Dale" Sandberg, 95, of Topeka, joined Margaret, his wife of 71 years, in the next life on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.

Dale was born March 11, 1927, in Ruthton, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Elizabeth (Olson) Sandberg. Dale married Margaret Mae Bruns on August 5, 1950. She preceded him in death on November 15, 2021.

Dale was a great husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. He was also special to many of his nieces and nephews. Survivors include his three children, Diane Knight, Stacy Sandberg, and Kathryn Barnes. He had 8 grandkids and 11 great grandkids.

He graduated from Pipestone High School in 1945 and served in the United States Navy during the end of WWII. Dale worked as an engineering technician doing surveying, drafting, and inspection and was employed by the City of Topeka for 31 years. During that time he lead the cleanup after the 1966 tornado and directed efforts to protect the city during the 1993 flood.

Dale was best known as the handyman that could do, build, or repair just about anything. If he didn't know how, he would learn. Dale enjoyed fixing and building in his workshop and was always happy to have the help of grandkids. He maintained his own homes, those of his children and donated his time and talents to the maintenance of First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for over 50 years. After retiring, he learned to use the computer to communicate with friends and relatives through holiday cards, emails, jokes, and photos. As a youth he learned to play the harmonica and entertained people with his playing up until a year or so before passing. Margaret was known for great cookies and Dale began helping by following her exact directions when cookie making finally became a 2-person job.

Dale also served as a Boy Scout leader, PTA president at Sumner Grade School, and softball coach when his three kids were younger.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, wife, and a grandson, Garreth Knight.
