Hugh W. Anstaett, 85, of Berryton, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born September 16, 1941 in Topeka, the son of Kenneth and Elizabeth (Henderson) Anstaett.
Hugh graduated from Topeka High School. He was employed as a Service Technician for Kansas Gas Service for over 45 years before retiring.
Hugh married Carolyn L. Lange on August 21, 1959 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2018. He was also preceded in death by his son, David J. Anstaett on October 6, 2026.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Kevin) Stark, Lori (Patric) Mitchell, six grandchildren, Justin, Brandon, Megan, Amy, Mariah and Rachel, seven great-grandchildren, and his sister, Kerri (Bennie) McGahey.
Hugh was a generous man with a big heart who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He never hesitated to offer his time, skills, or encouragement to those who needed it.
A skilled craftsman, Hugh took great pride in his work, especially in heating and air conditioning. One of his proudest accomplishments was building the family home from the ground up alongside his father. That home stands as a testament to his craftsmanship, determination, and dedication to his family.
Hugh was an avid, experienced fisherman. He spent hours fishing in all the Kansas area lakes as well as deep sea fishing in Florida and Hawaii. He shared his love and knowledge of fishing with his children, grandchildren, and others by being a fishing guide at Lake Texoma and Milford. Making great memories with his family and others doing something he truly loved.
Hugh also had a lifelong love of baseball, especially the Kansas City Royals. He enjoyed sharing that passion by coaching his daughters’ softball teams as well as assisting his son David’s baseball team creating memories that will last a lifetime. When his children’s playing days were over, Hugh continued to be one of the family’s biggest supporters. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their many activities. True to form, he was never shy about offering a little helpful “coaching” advice from the sidelines. His enthusiasm, encouragement, and opinions were all part of what made him so memorable.
