James E. Murray, 87, of Topeka, went to be with his Lord on Monday, August 18, 2025. He was born July 15, 1938 in Topeka, the son of James A. and Sarah (Lane) Murray.
James graduated from Topeka High School and attended Washburn University. He was employed by the State Hospital as an Aide, then Santa Fe Railroad for several years and later for IBM and served as the first African American Customer Engineer for over 30 years before retiring. He was a member of Lane Chapel C.M.E. and attended St. Mark's African Methodist Episcopal Church.
James loved to bowl and was active in several leagues.
James married Karolyn L. "Karol" Anderson on December 17, 1958 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2024. He was also preceded in death by one son, Ruben and two sisters, Carolyn and Blanche.
Survivors include three children, Lisa Sexton of Topeka, Kristie Carter of Topeka, and Dorcella Reese of Copperas Cove, Texas and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and his sister, Joyce Hayes of Topeka. Also surviving is his aunt, Viccie Duckworth of Topeka and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
A private Celebration of James's Life will be held at a later date. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Topeka, 550 SE 27th Street, Topeka, Kansas 66605.
Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is assisting the family with service arrangements.
