Janet J. Boggs, lovingly known as "Jan," was born on July 18, 1936, in Pratt, Kansas, and passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas. Jan was formerly of Overbrook KS for over 60 years moved to Topeka 2 years ago. Her life was a testament to her unwavering love for education, family, and community, shaping the hearts and minds of countless young learners over her impressive career.
Jan's journey in education began in a one-room schoolhouse, where she engaged students of multiple ages and laid the foundation for a career that would span over 30 years at Carbondale Elementary School. She had a unique talent for connecting with children and took great joy in hearing their stories. Her compassionate spirit was evident, as she playfully noted that she pulled more kindergarteners' teeth than the local dentist, reflecting both her dedication and playful nature.
As an alumna of Sun City High School, graduating in 1954, Jan went on to further her education at Pratt Junior College, graduating in 1956. She continued her academic journey at Emporia State University, where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in early education. Jan's commitment to early childhood education was matched only by her enthusiasm for sharing her knowledge with her students, earning her reputation as a great teacher and friend.
Beyond the classroom, Jan cherished moments spent with her family, often reminiscing about 99 Springs, where she celebrated many holidays and vacations with her family. She found joy in simple pleasures, such as vacationing and traveling with loved ones, picking sand plums to make jelly, and enjoying shows at the local civic center.
Jan is remembered not only for her accomplishments but also for the warmth she brought into the lives of those around her. Known for being shy yet loving, thoughtful, and kind, she was often seen as the voice of reason among her friends and family. Her legacy lives on through her pride in her family, which includes her daughters, Terri Boggs and Kim (Dave) Houser; her brother, Glenn Knowles; and her brothers, Dale (Carolyn) Knowles and Keith (Carol) Knowles. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren: Nici (Dane), David Jr. (Amber), Roy (Erin), and Missy (Will), Marc + Liza May.
Jan is predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Lauren (Larry) Boggs; her brother, Wayne Knowles; her sister, Lucy Mae Knowles-Shippy-McCarthy; and her nephew, Phil Knowles.
Jan will be remembered as a devoted educator, a cherished family member, and a friend whose kindness and compassion touched the lives of many. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know her.
