Jay Donald Kious, 67, of Wakarusa, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2026.
He was born June 30, 1958, in Burlingame, Kansas, the son of Don and Patty (Vandevord) Kious. He graduated from Burlingame High School in 1976. He was the running back to his high school football team, the Burlingame Wildcats. His father started the Burlingame Saddle Club which Jay became a part of through his high school years. He attended art school and for a time had his own art studio in Carbondale.
Jay was employed with Essex Wire in Topeka as a Machine Operator for many years. He worked with Swift Transportation as a truck driver and was proud to win a trophy for perfect driving and 1 million miles.
Jay married Dolores Kinnett on April 28, 1979 in Carbondale, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include son, Corey Kious; daughter, Carolyn Kious; grandchildren, Maliyah, Ericka, and Jordan Webb; and 2 great granddaughters, Royalty and Samiya. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jay was an avid outdoorsman and loved working with his hands. He cared for his neighbors and kept close friendships. He enjoyed planting roses around the house, tending to his cows, caring for his property, and when he could get away, you could find him out fishing on his boat or hunting. He was an avid sports fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas Jayhawks. He had an eye for art especially with his sketches. He loved his dogs, Bella and Dolly.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
