Jerry Ray Hazlett, 86, of Topeka, passed away on July 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on February 25, 1940, in Alva, Oklahoma, to Theodore and Edith Hazlett, Jerry pursued higher education at Emporia State University, earning a master's degree in biology and education.

His career was marked by significant contributions to wildlife conservation in Kansas. He worked with the Kansas Fish & Game Commission and later as a lobbyist for the Kansas Wildlife Federation before joining Kansas Wildlife and Parks until his retirement in 2005. Notably, Jerry played a pivotal role in preserving the Cheyenne Bottoms area in Western Kansas.

A devoted member of Brookwood Covenant Church, Jerry was a man of deep faith and commitment. In 1966, he married Nancy K. Nanninga Dawdy, who preceded him in death in 2018. Jerry's legacy is carried on by his children: Timothy Dawdy, Mark Hazlett and wife Sherilyn, and Andrea Reames and husband Brian. He cherished his grandchildren, James (Elizabeth), Luke (Yesenia), Benjamin, Tyler, Christopher, Matthew (Autumn), Elise, JesseLynne (Miguel), Summer, Arielle (Lindsey) and David and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Bonnie Harris, and daughter-in-law, Desima Dawdy. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steven Dawdy, and his brother, Richard Hazlett.

A passionate family man, Jerry was dedicated to homeschooling his grandchildren. A former minor league shortstop for the Kansas City Royals, he enjoyed playing clarinet, tennis, and baseball, alongside his hobbies of fishing and gardening. He was passionate lover of all animals especially his canine and feline companions. He loved a good storm and liked to venture out to see a tornado in true Kansas fashion.

Honoring his request, cremation is planned. A graveside service is pending at Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka. Please check back for more information.
