Karl Edward Alber, 82, of Topeka, passed away on February 10, 2026 due to chronic health problems.

Karl was born on January 18, 1944 to Edward H. Alber and Rose Alber Cole in Hutchinson, Kansas. He attended schools there and graduated from Hutchinson High School. He also attended Washburn University and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 1975.

Karl served his country in the United States Navy in the Pacific Fleet. He served on the destroyer U.S.S. Taylor DD468 and visited many places including Japan, Guam, and Pearl Harbor. Karl was glad he was in Pearl Harbor at the time of dedication of the Arizona Memorial, and met and shook hands with President John F. Kennedy.

After military service and moving to Topeka, Karl met Mary Ryan on a blind date. They were married on September 19, 1970.

After obtaining his degree, Karl taught for a number of years at Hanover, Rossville, Emmett and Delia Schools. He was hired by the State of Kansas in 1989 as a Corrections Officer at the Youth Center at Topeka. After retirement, he substitute taught at Topeka Catholic Schools and volunteered at the VA Hospital. He was also a member of St. Matthew Parish and the Knights of Columbus, Council 13012 and often volunteered as a greeter.

Karl married Mary A. Ryan on September 19, 1970. She survives. Other survivors include children, Karla (George) Bearse of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Victor (Stephanie) Alber of Colorado Springs, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his brother, Jim Alber.

Karl was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Alber on January 8, 2014 and his siblings, Roger, John and Steven.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Matthew Catholic Church and will be announced as soon as possible. Inurnment will take place at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2026 in Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Knights of Columbus Council 13012, P.O. Box 5087, Topeka, Kansas 66605.
