Linda Jean Willey, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on September 18, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 66. Born on December 4, 1958, in Topeka, she touched the lives of those around her through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering support.
For 30 years, Linda dedicated her career to the Topeka Capital Journal, where she thrived in the classified ad department and was known for her impressive typing skills, reaching over 100 words a minute. Her talent extended beyond work, as she brought her skills into her family’s home, contributing to their lives in countless ways. Additionally, Linda served the Mission Valley community as a bus driver and para-educator in an elementary school. She was particularly passionate about guiding children, always finding joy in working with them. She devoted herself to caring for children with disabilities, showcasing her deep compassion for others.
Linda's heart was as big as her commitment to family and community. Each Christmas, she was the one to ensure that everyone around her had more than enough, looking out for others with love and kindness. Her passion for family was evident every year as she traveled to Columbus, Indiana, to share fabrics, crafts, and heartfelt moments with her loved ones. The holidays were filled with laughter and joy, as her sweet potatoes and other culinary delights brought everyone together.
Growing up on a farm, Linda's early life was steeped in the values of hard work and community. She was actively involved in 4-H, a journey that continued throughout her life. A proud graduate of Mission Valley High School in 1976, she excelled at looking out for her siblings, always ready to lend a hand or offer support.
Linda was a vibrant, active member of her community, known for cheering on and supporting her extended family and friends. Her dedication to her community was further demonstrated through her 19 years on the Fair Board, where she earned the affectionate title of "Goat Lady," becoming the first Goat Superintendent. She took immense pride in her family, particularly relishing her role as a grandmother. Her grandchildren, Warren, Macy, Cameron, and Kyla, were a source of great joy and pride for her.
Linda's creative spirit shone through her hobbies, which included quilting, crafting, and creating beautiful beaded hair barrettes and earrings. She found tranquility in her flower garden and, she enjoyed being outdoors working with livestock. She was not born in a barn but she got there as quickly as she could.
Linda is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Richard Willey; her daughters, Melissa Willey and Jeanna (Charlie) Schlink; and her adored grandchildren, Warren, Macy, Cameron, and Kyla. She also leaves behind her sisters, Renie Bartee, Bonnie (David) Sage and Sally Davis; her brother, Boyd (Kim) Davis, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Boyd and Marilyn Davis, who raised a remarkable woman who would continue to touch the lives of so many.
As we remember Linda, we celebrate a life filled with kindness, creativity, and an abundance of love for her family and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her, as they carry forward the values she embodied throughout her remarkable life.
