Mr. Otto N. Vaughn Jr., 94, of Topeka, transitioned peacefully on May 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and unwavering faith. Born on October 29, 1931, in Springfield, Mo., to Thelma Bagley Vaughn and Otto Vaughn Sr., he was a man whose life reflected resilience, purpose, and deep love for others.
A proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Otto’s athletic gifts carried him to Santa Monica College on a basketball scholarship. Yet, his character shined even brighter than his talent. He made the selfless decision to return home to care for his mother, a testament to the values that would define his life. After her recovery, he continued to pursue his passion for sports, playing baseball at local and regional levels and even crossing paths with the historic Negro Leagues. He excelled in boxing, baseball, basketball and football and shared his experiences with youth and adults alike.
In 1952, Otto answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force. During his service, he proudly played for the Air Police Basketball Team before completing his military journey in 1956. His commitment to service continued as he found his calling with the Topeka Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Captain and served with honor until his retirement at age 60.
Otto was a lifelong learner and a man of deep faith. He found joy in reading the Bible, African American history, and literature, always seeking wisdom and understanding. His favorite scripture, Psalms 91, was more than words to him; it was a source of comfort, strength, and something he lovingly shared with his mother.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Otto’s greatest impact was in the lives he touched. For over 30 years, he poured into the next generation through mentorship, believing wholeheartedly in the power of knowledge, guidance, and encouragement. His presence uplifted many, and his influence will continue to echo through those he inspired.
He is lovingly remembered and supported by his devoted wife and companion of over 35 years, Dr. Glenda J. Overstreet Vaughn; his daughter Elise ( Edward) Thurman, and their children Lea, Taylor, Jordan, Christian (Kelsey), Edward Jr. (deceased) and Antwan; their grandchildren Noa, Nikaela, Blaise, Aniyah, Amir, and MJ, his daughter Kinya and grandchildren Kyra and Koren, son Darth and family and his bonus daughter, Dr. LaShawn ( Doug) Johnson, and their children Douglas (Jameka), Myles, his fiancé, Isabel, and Daniel; their grandchildren Sire, Aaron, Kairo and bonus grandson DJ; his bonus son Adrian (Rudi) Barron and their son Jasiah; and his bonus son Cortez and his children, RaJanae, Tez, his fiancé Jalajah, Shawn and Khalil and his granddaughter, Thalynn and bonus grandson, Thawa. His legacy also lives on through a host of extended family, friends, and countless individuals whose lives he touched and shaped.
A celebration of his remarkable life will be held on June 26, 2026, at 6 pm at Lake Shawnee Event Center to invited family and friends.
Otto’s life was a testament to love, service, and faith. He is and will be deeply missed, yet his spirit lives on in every life he touched and every lesson he shared.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the NAACP and/or the 501 TPS Foundation in his honor, both organizations he dedicated so much of his time in helping and supporting others.
