Peggy Ann Shrewsbury, 89, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in Topeka, surrounded by her family. Peggy lived a life without regrets, exactly as she wished.
Born on September 28, 1936, in Oneida, Kansas, to Elwin and Thelma Clifton, Peggy was the fifth of eight children-a position she credited for her strong will. After growing up across the rural Midwest, she moved to Topeka in the mid-1950s. It was there she met the love of her life, Donald R. Shrewsbury. They were married for 63 years until his passing in 2020.
Throughout her career, Peggy held several positions in Topeka, most notably with Hallmark Cards. Above all, she was a devoted wife, a mother of four, grandmother of nine, and great-grandmother of 16. Her greatest joy was her family, especially during the holidays when she delighted everyone with her cooking and Christmas music. She also ensured the family traveled together every year, camping and exploring across the country. Her love for travel led her to visit all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico, and she spent 15 winters as a "snowbird" in Marana, Arizona.
Peggy was a woman of many passions. She was an avid reader and a lifelong journaler, leaving behind over 40 personal journals. A talented quilter, she completed at least one quilt every year and earned numerous blue ribbons in the "Art is Ageless" competition. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, cheered fervently for the Royals and the Chiefs, and famously loved the color pink. Her pink hair even earned her the nickname "Pink Peggy."
A woman of deep faith and strong convictions, Peggy read the Bible cover-to-cover multiple times. While she was a staunch Republican who enjoyed a spirited political debate, she always respected the opinions of others and valued friendship and American unity above all else. In her later years at the Presbyterian Manor, she was affectionately known as the "Manor Queen."
She is survived by her four children: Donald R. (Cathy) Shrewsbury, Jr., Darrell J. (Cindy) Shrewsbury, James D. (Nancy) Shrewsbury, and Vicki Lynn (Doug) Gregory; her sisters, Shirley Butler and Susie Smith; and her brother, Virgil Clifton.
Cremation has taken place, and a private inurnment will be held at Rochester Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, cards, or donations, our family requests that you honor Peggy’s memory by spending quality time with your own family, just as she always did and be sure to wear pink.
