Penny Colleen Nelson

November 23, 1950 — August 27, 2022

Penny Colleen Hartner Nelson, age 71, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2022 at The House at Midland Care in Topeka, Kansas. She was born in Topeka on November 23, 1950, the only child of Charles and Eula Duff Hartner. She had the same striking red hair and vibrant, energetic spirt as her beloved mother.

Penny married the love of her life, Marc S. Nelson, on March 7, 1970 in Topeka. They were inseparable and devoted partners, celebrating 52 years of marriage this year. Together they built a love-filled life centered around family, friends, careers, and a wide variety of interests. Penny supported and cheered on their daughters, Erika and Brandy, in their many youthful pursuits including academics, art, school leadership, softball, basketball, and volleyball. Their many accomplishments as adults reflect the legacy of Penny's limitless love and commitment. Penny adored her grandchildren and treasured the time that she spent with them. Keeping up on Amalie and Oliver Landry's daily lives through social media was very important to her. Trips to visit the Landry family were always greatly anticipated and filled with fun.

Penny and Jodi Mackey formed an instantaneous bond of friendship as teenagers while working at Dillon's grocery store. Over the next 54 years, they shared their lives, enjoying countless good times and long conversations. Penny made many other dear friends over the course of her life, and she cherished them all.

She attended Gage Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, and Topeka High. Penny had a lovely soprano voice and sang in vocal groups at Topeka High and in the Washburn Belles. While completing her education at Washburn University, she served on University Child Development's board of directors as treasurer. Penny graduated in 1981 earning a bachelor's degree in communications. She then began a lengthy career utilizing her creative talents, writing, and media skills. Penny worked at the Kansas Department of Transportation as a communications specialist. At Econo-Clad Books, she managed a large catalog of books that were sold to school libraries. She worked for Josten's as a school yearbook editor. The last phase of her career was spent at Security Benefit Group where she held various positions marketing financial products. She retired in 2004 after 12 years of service.

With retirement came more time to volunteer, participate in organizations, and develop personal interests. Penny was a dedicated member of P.E.O. Chapter JG serving as recording secretary and treasurer. She had so much fun with her Bunco group and looked forward to their laughter-filled monthly gatherings. Penny loved playing golf at Cypress Ridge where she participated in the women's league. She took painting lessons for several years and joined the Topeka Art Guild. Her natural artistic talents flourished resulting in the creation of many beautiful works of art. Penny served on the board of directors of Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas and volunteered for its fundraiser, the Designers' Showhouse. She accepted leadership positions, was a corporate tour guide, and a frequent docent. Penny loved Christmas and was an enthusiastic collector of Christmas décor. This passion perfectly complimented her volunteer work for Sheltered Living's Festival of Trees. She was a lifelong avid reader, a trait that she instilled in her daughters. Penny relished delicious food, great recipes, and cooking shows. She was an accomplished cook who provided warm hospitality to family and friends. Everyone loved her legendary lasagna. She was also a fan of British comedy and drama, a talented home decorator, and a seasoned traveler. Penny and Marc traveled extensively throughout Europe. She thoroughly enjoyed researching each destination and planning the details of their transportation, sightseeing, and accommodations. They journeyed all over the U.S. taking long trips and camping out in their Airstream trailer, Tik-Tok. They also took many wonderful family vacations including an Alaskan cruise.

Penny loved life and made a concerted effort to make the most of it. Her intellect, sense of humor, spirited personality, caring nature, and love of adventure were highly valued by those who knew her. In 2014, she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a rare progressive disease for which there is currently no cure. She faced this monster with grace, dignity, and the determination to keep enjoying life as long as possible. Thankfully, she was able to remain active until a few months ago. As her health declined, she was lovingly cared for at home by her husband, Marc. Palliative at-home care was provided by Midland Care Hospice. The family is grateful to the Midland Care staff for their compassionate care and support.

Penny is survived by her husband, Marc; their two daughters, Erika (Karl) Martens, Kansas City, MO; and Brandy (Shane) Landry, Woodinville, WA; two grandchildren, Amalie and Oliver Landry; brothers-in-law Kent (Jill) Nelson, Topeka, and Dennis (Susan) Nelson, Overland Park, KS, four nieces, three nephews, several cousins, many friends, and Bonnie, her precious Golden Retriever. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

As Penny requested, she was cremated and there will be no formal memorial service. Family and friends will gather to celebrate and honor her life at a future time. Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st St., Topeka, KS 66604; Topeka Zoo, 635 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66606; or Midland Care Hospice, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
