Richard Eugene Reed

April 20, 1933 — November 3, 2025

Topeka

Richard Eugene Reed, affectionately known to many as Slim or Reed, passed away on November 3, 2025, in Topeka, surrounded by his loving son and daughter. Born on April 20, 1933, in Quincy Township, Iowa, Richard grew up on a farm, grounded in the values of hard work and perseverance. As a young man, he ventured into the workforce at a local gas station, where he began to forge his path.

Richard enjoyed a commendable career spanning over three decades with Neon Tube Light Company, where he served as an electrician and crane operator. His dedication to his craft allowed him to install signs, trusses, and air conditioning units for numerous businesses throughout Topeka and the surrounding areas. A proud member of LOCAL 226 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, he was known not only for his skills but also for the relationships he nurtured with his customers, often going above and beyond to ensure their satisfaction.

An advocate for teachers and students, Richard notably supported Rochester Elementary School in the Seaman USD 345 school district. His warmth and kindness extended to everyone around him, and his gentle and polite demeanor endeared him to friends and family. Coupled with his great sense of humor and a touch of ornery stubbornness, Richard was a truly unique individual.

Richard had a deep passion for the outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished the simple pleasures of nature. His love for woodworking and welding further showcased his hands-on approach to life, as he enjoyed spending time in his shop and assisting friends and family with repairs. A devoted family man, Richard relished opportunities to gather his family for camping trips and vacations, fostering bonds that would last a lifetime. Even as he and his wife became empty nesters, they continued to explore the United States with family and friends, creating countless cherished memories.

Richard served honorably in the Army from 1955 to 1961, stationed in Alaska as a military police officer, a period that contributed to his sense of duty and commitment to service.

In his personal life, Richard took immense pride in his family and his grandchildren, cherishing the moments spent with them. He leaves behind a loving family, including his son Terry Reed and daughter Tonya (Mike) Campbell, along with grandchildren Jeremiah Thomas, Rachel (Jimmy) Swan, Nicholas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, Corey Reed, Kelly Reed, and Dustin (Miranda) Reed. He was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren.

Richard is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edith M. Reed, with whom he shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, as well as by his parents Claude Reed and Mary Meyers, stepfather Pete Friesen, and his infant son Baby Reed, alongside his son Timmy Reed and daughter-in-law Shelia Reed.

In celebration of his life, a visitation will be held on November 25, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Southwest Chapel, located at 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, Kansas.
