Richard D. Stutzman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on April 27, 2025. Born June 15, 1937, in Harlan, Iowa, Richard led a life characterized by unwavering determination, boundless kindness, and deep commitment to his family.
A graduate of Harlan High School in 1955, Richard nurtured a spirit of generosity and warmth throughout his life, traits that were evident even in his childhood.
Richard's professional journey began at a young age, marking the start of a lifelong work ethic that would inspire those around him. Starting at age 9 he ran a morning paper route and at age 11, Richard added another job working at Hammes Shoes, sweeping the store inside and out every day after school. He began his career with Payless (ShoeSource) in 1960 as a store manager. In 1964 he was named district manager and was promoted in1968 to regional manager. He progressed through the management ranks at Payless, being named the company director of operations in its eastern division in 1973. In 1975, he became senior vice president and director of retail operations. In 1982 he became executive vice president and director of retail operations. In the Spring of 1994, Richard took on the additional responsibility for the direction and management of real estate and construction for Payless. He was known for his leadership and continued optimism about the future, often saying, “The greatest growth is still ahead.” He retired in 1995.
Family was of paramount importance to Richard, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He was known for his loving and protective nature, infused with humor as he delighted in teasing those he loved. Richard's love and affection for his wife, Lillian Jacqueline “Jacquie” Stutzman, whom he was married to for 66 wonderful years, was evident to all; with her at his side, he felt they could conquer the world.
Richard spent countless hours volunteering his time and leadership to several organizations throughout his life. In June 2018, he was recognized for 50 years of service as a Master Mason in Craftsmen Lodge No. 314, Lincoln, NE. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner. He served on many boards in Topeka including the role of president at both Topeka Country Club and Top of the Tower Club.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Laura (Dave) Warren, Carrie (Theodore) Demonchaux, and Cindy Stutzman; his grandchildren, Mindy, Jennifer, Sheree, Natalie, Noelle, Jacob, and Jillian; as well as his great-grandchildren, Jayden, Austin, Ellisyn, Nora, and Lincoln. His legacy of love, kindness and dedication will forever live on in their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jacquie; his siblings Nadine Kozul, Gloria Brown, and Earl Stutzman; and his parents, Merle and Edna Stutzman.
Richard D. Stutzman will be remembered for his caring spirit, his unwavering love for his family, and his ability to bring joy to those around him.
Memorial contributions can be made to Boys and Girls Clubs of Topeka or Helping Hands Humane Society.
