Roy Gene Laster Jr., 65, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

He was born March 6, 1961, in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of Roy Sr. and Elizabeth (Bentley) Laster. He graduated from Topeka West High School. He served in the United States Air Force at Edwards Air Force Base in California where he obtained training to further his career in boiler operations.

Roy was employed with the State of Kansas for 23 years, beginning as a building manager at Eisenhower and ending his final position as Deputy Director of OFPM.

Roy is survived by his long-time partner, Penny Peterson; his sons, William Laster and Roy Gene Laster III; step-sons, Vance McGill and Brandon McGill; and many friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and his beloved dog, Wooky.

Roy was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed riding his four-wheeler, shooting his guns at the range, and many camping trips to Taylor Park, Colorado.

Roy's wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Roy's Life will be held at a later date to be determined. His final resting place will be in the mountains of Taylor Park, Colorado.
