Ruth Colleen Budden, 86, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
She was born June 12, 1940 in Clay Center, Kansas, the daughter of James S. and Otena M. (Anderson) Elliott. She graduated from Salina High School and received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Kansas State University.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Santa Fe Singers and a CASA advocate all in Topeka.
Ruth married James “Jim” R. Budden on June 18, 1961 in Salina, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 28, 2013. Survivors include her children, Robert (Kimber) Budden and Heather (Chuck) Smith; her four grandchildren, Erin (Jason), Michelle (Jon), Ryan (Janice) and Rebecca; her three great-granddaughters, MacKenzie, Charlotte and Cecilia; her siblings, Tom (Pat) Elliott, Mary Burke and Dale Elliott; her brother-in-law, J.L. Doering; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jim Elliott and his wife, Lois; and her sister-in-law, Glenda Doering.
Ruth was deeply rooted in family. She loved family traditions such as Fourth of July gatherings at Rosedale BBQ, Smith Center opening weekend, Christmas in Arizona, making Christmas ornaments for loved ones and coming up with ornery gifts to give to her “grands and greats”. Her sarcastic sense of humor included sharing funny comics and memes. She enjoyed participating in sing-alongs and reading poetry at area nursing homes. After moving to Martin Creek, she was active in their community events. Many other enjoyments included Mexican food, Cozy Burgers, finding new pies with her “Peeps”, reading, music, crossword puzzles, bowling and watching NASCAR along with other sports.
Honoring her request, cremation is planned. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Christ Lutheran Church, 3509 SW Burlingame Rd, Topeka, KS 66611, where a celebration of life ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Dove Cremations & Funerals, Southeast Chapel in Topeka is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Harvesters, 1220 Timberedge Rd, Lawrence, KS 66049.
