Listen to Obituary

Scottie Lynn Fulton, 68, of Carbondale, KS, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday, August 18, 2025. Scott walked into University of Kansas Medical Center on August 6, 2025, with what was thought to be a normal medical issue. Scott flew out on his angel wings on August 18, 2025, after a short 72-hour knowledge of undiagnosed and aggressive liver cancer.

Scott was born on Father’s Day, June 16, 1957, to Vernon Leroy and Viola Jean (Redenbaugh) Fulton in Burlington, KS. He graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School in 1975.

Scott married Rhonda Jean Shelton in Carbondale, KS, on November 19, 1978. Scott always told us they got married on Rhonda’s birthday, so he only had to remember one really important day.

Scott and Rhonda made their home in Carbondale where they raised three sons. Their home was one of many to become second or third home to friends of theirs or their sons, and it did not bother either of them at all. Scott and Rhonda both have honorary status of “bonus dad and mom” to many.

In addition to Scott’s family and friends, Scott’s passion was being a barber. When he could not cut hair, it bothered him because that was time to catch up with his clients that had become friends. Even though he had sold The Hair Mill, he was not ready to retire fully, despite his family encouraging him to slow down and enjoy life even more. Up until the very day he walked into the hospital, his appointment book was full of appointments.

Scott began his love of barbering at The Barber College in Wichita, KS, in 1977. He then went to Bank Barber Shop while also working part time at Country Club Barbers in Topeka. He started cutting hair in Carbondale at Scott’s Style Shop and then moved back into Topeka to barber at Styling Unique where he met Phil Robertson. After a few different adventures, Phil and Scott decided to take a leap of faith and open their own barber shop at the corner of 29th and Wanamaker in Topeka, KS in 1987 – The Hair Mill.

Scott loved sports and spending time with people. He loved cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals and the Kansas State University Wildcats. He was known as the “Batman” to many. Whether it was playing pool, enjoying fantasy football, or competing in horseshoes, he had a knack for making every moment enjoyable. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching his sons’ baseball teams and playing slow pitch softball with family and friends. He later loved to cheer on his grandchildren’s activities while enjoying a bag of popcorn. His love “fore” golf created many cherished memories shared on the greens with those closest to him. He loved going for motorcycle rides with friends or Rhonda. He also loved good looking motorcycles and classic cars. His family has struggled with his favorite song because he loved listening and sharing different types of music.

Scott is survived by wife, Rhonda, of Carbondale; Lucas Scott (Ashley) Fulton and Casey Lynn (Marsha) Fulton of Topeka; Charles Matthew Fulton of Carbondale. He was awarded his favorite title of “Papa” to Catherine, Kensleigh, Colt, Korebn and Taydon. Survivors also include his sister, Marilyn (Darwin) Nichols and brother, Gary (Susan) Fulton of Topeka and sister-in-law, Susan Fulton of Sugar Creek, MO; numerous in-laws, “outlaws”, nieces and nephews (including great- and great-great-), very good friends, co-workers and many, many beloved clients.

Scott was greeted in heaven by his parents, Vernon and Viola Fulton; his parents-in-law, Loi “Bud” and Phyllis Shelton; his brother, Michael Fulton.

Honoring his request, cremation is planned. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the Carbondale Community United Church of Christ, 104 S 4th St, Carbondale, KS 66414. A celebration of life ceremony will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 1, 2025, at the church. Inurnment will follow at Carbondale Cemetery. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel in Topeka is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carbondale Lodge #70 A.F. & A.M., 228 Main St, Carbondale, KS 66414.
