Susan Janell (Gatewood) Prescott

Susan Janell (Gatewood) Prescott, 69, of Topeka, Kansas and formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away July 28, 2025 at a Topeka hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gray Oscar Prescott, Jr., in May 2015.

Susan was born July 27, 1956 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Jimmie Gatewood and Betty (Carter) Gatewood. She attended Lafayette High School in St. Joseph where she was on the honor roll. Susan was active in Rainbow Girls and the youth activities at Savannah Avenue Baptist Church.

Susan was intelligent and talented. After high school, she obtained a beautician license and hospitality degree from Washburn University. Susan worked in various kitchen and dietary positions before suffering a disabling stroke in 2004. She volunteered at Birthright of Topeka for many years and loved the casinos and playing bingo. Most importantly, Susan was a mother and grandmother who will be remembered lovingly by her family.

Susan was also preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter Janelle Jabary, son Travis Jabary, grandson Romeo Jabary and great-grandson Aspyn Evans. She is survived by daughter Layla Jabary; son Anthony Jabary; sisters Brenda Chilcoat and Penny Gatewood; brothers Fred Gatewood, James Gatewood and Frank Blair; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Susan's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2025 at the First Baptist Church, 500 E Pawnee St, Savannah, Missouri 64485. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Interested parties can tune into the livestream of the service on the Facebook page of the church.
