Terry Michael Schmitz

Terry Michael Schmitz, 63, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2026.

He was born October 30, 1962, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of LaVerne and Dianne (Vondemkamp) Schmitz. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1980. He retired from the United States Navy with 16 years of service. Terry was employed by the Federal Government until his retirement in 2022.

Mr. Schmitz was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church of Topeka.

Terry married Shirley Patrick on September 16, 1994 in Mississippi. She survives. Other survivors include son, Terry Schmitz Jr (Jessica) of Virginia; daughter, Kathleen Kirnie (Jamie) of Florida; step-son, Chris Vaughan (Donna) of Mississippi; sister, Debra Mack (Albert) of Kansas; brother, Mark Schmitz (Kevin Hill) of Missouri; 9 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Jamie Schmitz; and step-son, Brent Vaughan.

Terry was a man of many passions; he was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and a skilled handyman. Though he was a Royals fan, his favorite player was his grandson in Little League. He adored being a grandfather and loved taking his grandchildren to the amusement parks. Above all, Terry cherished the quality time he shared with his family, especially the adventures he shared with his wife.

Following Terry's wishes, cremation is planned. A Catholic Service in celebration of his life will be held at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 2014 NW 46th St, Topeka, KS 66618, date and time to be determined.
