Roy Jay Merrill, 65, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, Kansas. He was born January 12, 1957, in Silverton, Oregon, the son of Mareth Jay and Wilma Jean (Gilbreath) Merrill.

Roy graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena, Texas, and attended Baylor University. He began his career in Houston with Schlumberger learning the world of telecommunication systems. Roy then went to work for ROLM where he won many awards over numerous years including Employee of the Year. Some of his large projects included the Johnson Space Center, the University of Houston, Sony and of course Memorial Hermann Hospital where he later was employed as a Senior Telecommunications Engineer. He was beyond excellent in his work and had a very strong work ethic. He was known for his customer service, his love of people, and his love of the Lord.

Roy married Lana Ballinger on May 2, 1979 in Fort Worth, Texas. She preceded him in death on July 28, 2016.

Survivors include his brother, Tim J. (Carra) Merrill of Gardner, Kansas; one nephew, Bryan Merrill of Gardner, Kansas; one niece, Lauren (Bryan) Averill of Gardner, Kansas; and two great-nephews, Brendyn and Brantley. Also surviving are extended families including the Barbers, the Grahams, the Fultons and the Siems’s.

A Celebration of Roy's Life will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home & Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, Texas 77079 on Saturday December 3, 2022 at 10am with a lunch reception immediately following. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Avenue in Topeka is assisting the family with service arrangements.
