In Memory Of
Joyce Karen Steffe
1936 - 2023

Joyce Karen Steffe passed away May 4th at Lexington Park Long Term Care after a hard fought battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. She was born January 18th, 1936 to Nels Chris Larsen and Sarah Fern (Guthridge) Larsen. Joyce was the youngest of three daughters. She grew up on a farm outside of Quimby, Iowa and graduated from Quimby High School in 1954. She played basketball, was a cheerleader, was Homecoming Queen and Valedictorian of her class.

She met her husband, David Steffe, through her sister Shirley who was dating David’s brother, Dirl. David and Joyce were married June 25th, 1955 and Dirl and Shirley also married so all of their children were double cousins.

David and Joyce farmed most of their life at Moville, IA., Cherokee, IA., and Spencer, IA.

They had three children, Linda Sue, Kathleen Ann and Steven David. In 1971, they moved to Arnolds Park, IA where Joyce had accepted a position with the United States Post Office.

In 1976, Joyce transferred to Sioux City, IA, so the family relocated to Sergeant Bluff. In 1992, David and Joyce moved to Topeka, KS to retire and be closer to family. Even after retirement, Joyce liked to stay busy. She worked various part time jobs including home health work, the 2000 census, and also gave away samples at local grocery stores. She gave away thousands pf samples over the years and immensely enjoyed chatting with customers. David and Joyce greatly enjoyed their grandchildren and rarely missed a Little League Game, Christmas Program or recital.

In later years they spent many hours playing board games. Joyce played a mean game of scrabble and rarely lost. Her and David enjoyed drives in the country, going for coffee, occasional day trips and gardening. Joyce was a fierce defender of family and supported them in their endeavors large or small. That included graduations, weddings, and moves around the country.

She either helped moved or visited her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, Des Moines Kansas City, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Burbank. She wasn’t afraid of change and encouraged us all to be brave. Her best advice was to “Roll with whatever life throws at you.” Roll, Roll, Roll. One of her regrets was that Parkinson’s disease robbed her of the ability to hold or play with her great-grandchildren. But she is at rest now and free of disease and pain.
“Yes we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord”. 2 Corinthians 5:8.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Steffe and Kathy Fox and her son, Steve Steffe. Grandchildren, Christopher (Valdeane) and their children Nicholas, Sophia, Melany and Liam. Granddaughter Whitney (Marshall) and their children Maxwell and Matilda. She is also survived by several brothers – in – law and sisters-in- law, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in her parents, her husband David (2011), granddaughter Margie Ann Fox, sister and brother – in – law Theo and Mildred Stevenson, sister Shirley Steffe, several other in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Lexington Park and Elera Caring Hospice for her excellent and thoughtful care. Many went above and beyond to make her comfortable, especially in her end days.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10am on Wednesday, June 21st, at Dove Funerals Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka. Burial will take place at Good Hope Cemetery in Correctionville, Iowa.
